2.10 Live From State Farm Arena: Vipers vs. Austin

February 10th, 2012, 6:59 pm by

Hello everyone,

Hoping this live blog thing works tonight. We haven’t had a lot of luck getting a good connection at the Arena. I will battle through it as best I can.

Vipers update: Point guard Ben Uzoh has been called up to the Cavaliers. Because I am brilliant, I wrote a story on Uzoh waiting to get called up to the NBA to advance tonight’s game. When I spoke to him, he knew nothing of a call up. When I found out last night, I was on my second Shiner Bock after I had punched out of work and finished class. Luckily, my astute workmates, Brian Sandalow and Peter Rasmussen, were there to rework the story.

One other pregame observation, former Viper legend, Julian Sensley, is a memeber of the Austin Toros.

1.7 Live From State Farm Arena: Vipers vs. Dakota – New Boyz Edition

January 7th, 2012, 6:48 pm by

Howdy all. Nearing tip off for tonight’s game between the Vipers and the Dakota Wizards. The Vipers dropped a tough one last night, despite a huge game by Kansas product and Houston Rockets assignee Marcus Morris, who had 31 points and 14 rebounds.

After the game tonight, New Boyz are going to perform. I’m told they are better than Kris Kross even though they don’t wear their clothes backwards. We shall see about that.

Pregame Vipers News: Guards Jay-R Strowbridge and Tarver were waived today. Former OU guard Willie Warren has been added. Guard Ashton Mitchell has been reaquired. Read the rest of this entry »

1.6 Live From State Farm Arena: Vipers vs. Dakota

January 6th, 2012, 6:51 pm by

Howdy all. I am back on the Vipers’ beat after missing two games on a vacation in which I consumed a lot of beer in Colorado. This will be the first chance to see Houston Rockets assignee Marcus Morris, a rookie from Kansas, who is expected to make his Vipers’ debut. Hopefully, this will go better than the Hasheem Thabeet Era from last season. He was horrible. Actually, I’m sure he still is.

12.10 Live From State Farm Arena: Vipers vs. Austin

December 10th, 2011, 6:40 pm by

Howdy all,

Back for the second game of a back-to-back series between the Vipers and Toros. The Vipers improved to 5-3 on Friday with a 120-114 victory. The Vipers held on despite scoring just one field goal in the final five minutes. Vipers coach Nick Nurse was critical of his team’s defensive play, especially in the fourth quarter after they allowed way too many easy baskets.

12.9 Live from State Farm Arena: Vipers vs. Austin

December 9th, 2011, 6:46 pm by

Howdy everyone, follow along with exiciting action that is the depleted NBA D-League. Talent was already scarce to begin with, but the opening of NBA training camps have ravaged the rosters across the league. The Vipers have lost three to camps - Terrel Harris (Miami Heat), Tyren Johnson (Indiana Pacers) and Marshall Brown (Portland Trail Blazers).

Our old friend, Julian Sensley has returned after playing the last couple of seasons in Greece. He was on the Vipers’ championship team a couple of years ago. He hasn’t been cleared to play with the NBA so he won’t play tonight. The Vipers are hopeful he will be able to play Saturday.

12.1 Live From State Farm Arena: Vipers vs. Iowa

December 1st, 2011, 6:32 pm by

OMG! I think I have figured out the issues that have plagued my Vipers blog.

Things you should know:

>> The Vipers are 3-0 and tonight’s game is the last of a four-game home stand to open the season.

>> The Energy is 1-2 and is looking to avenge Wednesday’s 134-108 loss to the Vipers.

>> I have never written “OMG” before.

I will try my best to give you timely updates here.

First Quarter

5:58 – Vipers lead 15-11 heading into the first media timeout. Charles Okwandu has two blocks. Looks like that could be a big battle between him at Jarrid Famous, who burned the Vipers for 33 points and 15 rebounds on Wednesday. Okwandu is part of the Vipers’ “second line.” “First liner” Sam Coleman looks like he might have matchup problems against Famous.

2:43 – Vipers leads 21-15. Vipers doing all the things they love to do – Play uptempo and shoot plenty of open shots. Interesting observation during the recent run of play: Josh Tarver brought up the ball and three Vipers were spotted up at the arc ready to get the ball and shoot.

00:0 – Vipers lead 28-23 after one quarter. The Energy tied the game at 23 with 1:13 left, but Stanley Asumnu scores the quarter’s final five points for the Vipers. Terrel Harris blocked a 3-point shot by Moses Ehambe with less than a minute left.

Second  Quarter

5;52 – Vipers lead 42-39. Jarrid Famous started to heat up. He has nine points and six rebounds. I’ll give the Vipers’ 5-10 (generously listed) guard Jay-R Stowbridge credit for driving against Famous, who stands 6-11. He didn’t make the shot, but I give him credit for not getting it blocked.

2:10 – The Energy has taken the lead, 51-47 after a 12-5 run since the last timeout. Moses Ehambe has six points. Apparently, he can score when Terrel Harris isn’t guarding him. The Vipers have taken 24 threes and have made five. They aren’t afraid to fire away.

0:00 Iowa leads 60-51 at halfime. The Energy outscored the Vipers, 23-9 over the last 6:53 and 37-23 in the second quarter. Moses Ehambe has 15 points to lead the Energy. Jarrid Famous has 11 points and eight rebounds. The Vipers are led by Tyren Johnson and Stanley Assumnu, who each ave 11 points. One reason the Vipers are in the hole is their cold shooting from the arc. They have made just 5 of 26 threes.

Third Quarter

5:49 – The Energy has opened a 83-65 lead. Moses Ehambe has scored 10 of the Energy’s 23 points so far. He has a game-high 25. The Vipers have made both of their 3-point attempts after going 5 of 26 in the first half.

2:53 – The Energy leads 88-72. The Vipers have played loose defense for most of the this quarter, but they seem to have shored that up in the last couple of minutes or so. Are they too deep in a hole?

0:00 – Iowa takes 98-80 lead into the final quarter. The Vipers were outscored 98-80 in the third quarter. Vipers’ coach Nick Nurse has gone away from the “hockey line” subbing. The Vipers are shooting the three a little better, but at the moment, they can’t stop the Energy so it really doesn’t matter how many threes they make until they start playing some D.

Fourth Quarter

10:38 – The Vipers are playing some D. They have outscored the Energy 7-0 to begin the fourth quarter. All of those in transition.

Random thought: Ref. C.J. Washington loves to call ticky-tack fouls.

2:52 – The Energy leads 122-115. The Vipers closed the gap to as close as four points, but a three by Brandon Ewing and a layup by Jarrid Famous in the last minute have given the Energy a somewhat comfortable cushion. The Vipers need stops. Tyren Johnson has come alive in the second half for the Vipers. He now has 32 points, a game-high so far.

Final: Energy 130. Vipers 117.

4.1 Live From State Farm Arena: Vipers vs. Springfield

April 1st, 2011, 5:58 pm by

Howdy all,

Here’s the live blog for the Vipers vs. Springfield. We have a top-notch officiating crew so I fully expect a clean game. It should be an interesting game. The Vipers need one win to lock down home court advantage for the first round of the playoffs. The athletic training for Springfield appears to be top notch so I don’t expect any lingering injuries for the Armor.

First Quarter

8:22 – The Vipers lead 10-2. Armor coach Dee Brown called a 20-second timeout after the Vipers’ Matt Janning followed a Jon Scheyer miss. Hasheem Thabet has been active early on.

5:59 – Vipers off to a 18-4 lead. Thabeet has been surprisingly good so far with six points and six rebounds. The Armor have made 2 of 11 shots. The Vipers are 7  of 15.

2:16 – Getting UGLY for the Armor. The Vipers lead 30-9. The Vipers are playing with more energy and purpose. The Armor seem to be going through the motions. At 13-35, the Armor are out of playoff contention so that might have something to do with it. As big a lead as the Vipers have, they have missed some easy shots, but they’ve made up for that with effort. That’s exactly what Vipers coach Chris Finch wanted to see.

0:00 – The Vipers lead 34-16 after one quarter. Big stat: Rebounding. The Vipers are hold a huge 26-11 advantage. Oh yes, shooting too. The Vipers have made 13 of 28, including 4 of 11 from three. The Armor? 4 of 22 and 1 of 3.

Second quarter

5:33 – Springfield has sprung to life in the first part of the second quarter. The Vipers lead 44-31 and and moved into striking distance thanks to some superb shooting. The Armor has made 6 of 8 shots from the field including 3 of 3 from the arc. Thabeet is actually playing well. He has 14 points and six rebounds.

1;16: The Vipers lead 52-39. Terrel Harris is stepping up for the Vipers, scoring the team’s last eight points, including a three and a layup in which he took something like eight steps.  He has 11 points and nine rebounds.

Halftime: The Vipers lead 57-41. The Vipers are shooting 48.9 percent (22 of 45) and the Armor  37.5 percent (15 of 40). The Vipers own a 33-18 rebouding advantage.  Hasheem Thabeet (Yes, you read that correctly) leads the Vipers with 14 points and six rebounds. Terrel Harris as 11 points and nine rebounds. Jarvis Gunter had 12 points and Gavin Edwards 10 points, both off the bench, to lead the Armor.

Also, the officiating has been excellent.

Third quarter

4:40 – The Vipers lead 71-60. Jerel McNeal just fouled JamesOn Curry on a three point make and he will get a chance to complete a four-point play after a media timeout. Curry’s coming on this quarter, where he has scored all nine of his points.

2:56 – The Armor are charging back. They’ve cut the lead to 73-67. The Vipers are not taking care of the ball. Silly turnovers by Terrel Harris and Jon Scheyer have helped to contribute to a 10-2 run over the last 2 1/2 minutes or so. The Vipers have definitely lost their focus.

58.7 – Quick 4-0 run gives the Vipers a little bit of breathing room and momentum as they hang on to a 82-73 lead. The Armor haven’t been able to get closer than 5. Something tells me they will.

0:00 – The Vipers still lead 82-73 after three quarters. Springfield has actually outscored the Vipers in the second and third quarters. Falling behind 34-16 after the first quarter hasn’t exactly helped. The Armor is very much in this game and I suspect it hasn’t another rally in it.

Fourth quarter

FINAL

Vipers win 108-95

Sorry for the lack of updates in the fourth. Connection issues.  Basically the Vipers came out strong in the fourth quarter and built a good lead with four threes, including three by Matt Janning, to built a 15 point lead. The Armor cut it to eight, but didn’t come closer. The Vipers win and secure first-round home court advantage for the playoffs.

‘The Animal’ is back, but will he play?
